Amazon’s Fake Review Problem

Amazon has been hit yet again with a spout of fake reviews across a wide array of products, predominantly electronics, beauty products, clothes and supplements, with these products averaging over 60% fake reviews. This is a huge issue Amazon are clamping down on as reviews not only optimise the products place when searched, it is the 2nd most important factor consumers take when purchasing after the price. So people giving false reviews increases their chance of a sale while either misleading the customer or blatantly lying to them, hence why Amazon are taking such a serious approach to the issue.

So, how do you know what’s real and what’s not? Good question! There are many ways you can determine what reviews are true and which are false. Any short, simplistic reviews such as “ Great product” or “Would definitely buy again”, these tend to be one of the red flags that they are a fake review. Genuine reviews tend to go into more detail about the product, highlighting it’s pros and cons or maybe an anecdote involving the product. Another way of telling if the review/reviewer is an accurate one is by viewing their profile to see their other reviews. If an individual has given many reviews in a short period of time, chances are they’re fake. If it’s the opposite and the reviews are few and far between, it’s a safe bet that they are genuine reviews.

In addition to this, Amazon have included many features to combat the issue, with implementing the ‘Verified Purchase’ notation. This will be included if the product is purchased from Amazon, indicating that the person has indeed received the product. This adds legitimacy to the reviewers claims and reduces the amount of fake reviewers on the product. To avoid any misconceptions with reviews, the best piece of advice I could give you is to read the medium rating reviews, people who have given it 2-4 stars as opposed to people who give it 5 stars. That way you are far more likely to receive truthful reviews from people who have actually purchased and used the product.

Looking ahead, it will be very interesting to see how Amazon will combat the bombardment of fake reviews. It’s an issue that’s plagued the site for years, surely now Amazon can use all its power and team of boffins, to come up with a solution to eradicate the problem.
